Cattails

Cattails at the ponds edgeCattails are a must for any water garden and will grow in damp soil at the edge of your pond, or you may wish to pot it and submerge it in up to 2 feet of water. They add early spring excitement to your garden and are a favorite of kids! They add interest and beauty to flower arrangements and may be dried and enjoyed year round. If space is a problem choose the dwarf varieties of cattails. Left unchecked they can become invasive in boggy soils. Keep the roots from freezing, and they will come back year after year.

Cattails give a pleasing, natural effect to the ponds edge. Because the non-dwarf variety can get up to 10 feet tall I use the dwarf variety in my pond. I trimmed down 5 f gallon buckets (I didn’t need them that tall, I cut them so they are about half as tall as they were). I placed rocks over the drainage holes, put a chunk of Jobs tree spike fertilizer, filled the buckets halfway with garden soil, added the plants and covered the soil with gravel. I submerged these in 10 inches of water (about 4 inches over the pot’s edge) and placed them on the back side of the pond. I mixed a few siberian iris with them and I love the look.The frogs love my little cattail area and they grow tall enough to cover some problems I have with my liner being exposed. It certainly reduces and softens the “rock necklace” effect of the typical backyard pond.

Zones 3-10   Cattails love it hot and sunny.
